Description

German Drag or Drogue Parachute.
NSN 1670-12-144-3097
Uncertain if this was for the aircraft or ejection seat.
I somehow acquired this in my parachute rigging days in the USAF.
But it appears to have hash marks on the info panel tracking possible deployments? My guess is it’s Panavia Tornado or F-104 Starfighter related. All my research on those aircraft wasn’t convincing, so that’s an assumption. In the meantime I will continue trying to find its origins.
It’s also possible that this was used for aerial delivery or cargo systems. Possibly as an extraction or pilot-chute to draw out a larger parachute.
Manufactured April 1981, put in service March 1983?
These are sometimes referred to as fist-ribbon canopies, most US drag systems used a ring-slot style of canopy (big square openings)
Total length in relaxed state is 29’
400cm is about 13’ diameter when fully deployed.
24 suspension lines branch out into more towards canopy.
In typical German style, there is a LOT of detailed work and stitching. This is partly why I thought it may be a drogue system, because it’s built like the ACES II drogue system we have for US fighters and the B-1. Our drag chutes are not as finely assembled.
Very nice condition considering it’s approaching 40 years old.
Regardless of its origins, a very rare piece.
